Diagnostic Value of Cardiac MRI in Aortic Valve Stenosis in Comparison with Echocardiography
نویسنده
چکیده
Accurate assessment of the orifice area and/or the pressure gradient is an important factor for determining whether surgery is necessary or not. Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE) is the method of choice to determine the severity of aortic valve stenosis. By using Doppler ultrasound, the maximum velocity over the valve is measured and used to calculate the peak pressure gradient. However, ultrasound examination has its limitations, e.g. noise can obscure the measurement in obese or emphysematous patients or if the orientation of the heart and valve make accurate ultrasound imaging impossible. Also, in some cases of severe stenosis, the pressure gradient measured by Doppler ultrasound overestimates the actual pressure gradient. Furthermore, direct measurement of the orifice dimension is not accurate and reproducible in cases of severe stenosis [3] .

A total of 14 cases of infective endocarditis (IE) in children aged 6 months to 10 years were seen from December 1987 to December 1992 at the pediatric unit of Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Center. The majority of patients (12 of 14) were between 5 and 10 years of age. Acyanotic congenital heart disease was known to preexist in 78.6% and rheumatic valvular heart disease in 21.4% of cases. Or...
متن کاملComparison of magnetic resonance imaging and cardiac catheterization in patients with suspected severe aortic stenosis.
OBJECTIVE Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a novel technique used in the assessment of aortic stenosis. The aim of the study was to compare MRI and cardiac catheterization (CAT) that is still considered to be a "golden standard" in this indication. METHODS Thirty-four patients referred to CAT for the evaluation of aortic stenosis were enrolled into the study. CAT was performed according to...

Background: Balloon valvuloplasty is a relatively new technique for relief of obstruction of aortic valve. The primary results of this procedure are similar to surgical valvotomy with fewer complications and mortality. Materials and methods: One hundred fifty-five patients with congenital aortic stenosis were enrolled in this study over a period of 6 years (1991-1997). Participants were all un...
